Welcome to Storey's Way

We are committed to supporting your child's learning journey and inspiring a lifelong love of reading. Through personalised one-to-one classes and engaging workshops, we help children aged 3 to 10 build strong literacy skills, laying the foundations for future academic success.

In our sessions, children are encouraged to share their ideas and use their imagination. We work closely with parents and caregivers to help children develop a genuine interest in of reading and writing.

Our Services

SHOPPING // I’d like to buy a car please! Playing shopping aligns perfectly with our goal to sneak the “studying” into fun activities. This is maths, English and social skills rolled into one low-prep activity.

We revisit this activity often. It’s a fun way to practice fine motor skills - cutting, sticking, tying knots and bows.

MINIMAL PREP ACTIVITY // Some of our activities and setups are planned ahead but this one was really just a few things thrown onto some trays at the last minute. The children enjoyed it nevertheless. It also provided a chance for me to observe their use of the equipment and their interactions with each other. #homelearning #hkmama #hksensoryplay

FOAM LETTERS & KINETIC SAND // In many phonics schemes, s is one of the first grapheme phoneme correspondences taught, yet /s/ is often a tricky sound for children to produce. Mr 2 can recognise the letter s and say /s/ in isolation but generally replaces it with /h/ in speech. This kinetic sand set up provided ample opportunity for Mr 2 to hear and practise the /s/ sound in words like sand, sandcastle, scoop, sweep and slice. It also happened to be a sunny afternoon! #hkphonics #kineticsand

BATHTIME // These foam letters made an appearance in the bath today! Mr 1.5 had fun scooping them, stacking them and sticking them around the tub. #hongkongphonics #hkmama #hkmums #hkhomelearning

SPRAY BOTTLE // More water play for Mr 1.5 today because he asked really sincerely for “moh [more] pa [please] woh taa [water]”. This spray bottle is a longtime favourite and also great for developing hand strength and coordination. #spraybottle #hkmama #hkmums #hkhomelearning

LETTER SOUP // Mr 1.5 has been very keen to play with physical letters lately. He can confidently recognise the letters t, o and p and say their sounds, His favourite one by far is o and he likes to point it out wherever it appears in his books or when he sees it in signs and labels. His pronunciation of /o/ still needs some development but we are moving in the right direction! Here he is sorting the letters out into three labelled bowls. #phonics #hongkongphonics #hkmama #hkhomelearning #hkmums

FINGERSPACES // Miss 4.5 can now write 3-4 sentences with relative ease, but tends to write all the letters consecutively like one very long word. She is beginning to appreciate the need to put fingerspaces between her words, but still needs constant reminders to so so. Here she is writing an entry in her scrapbook about her recent visit to #tokyodisneyland . #hkmama #hkmums #hongkonghomelearning #fingerspace

THREE // Mr 1.5 can accurately count two objects, and can confidently say the numbers one and two. He also appears to be able to subitise quantities of 1 and 2 (i.e. tell how many there are without counting). Here he is counting three pebbles that he collected. He can’t really pronounce the word “three” (it comes out as “whaa”) but he does understand the quantity it represents. #numeracy #hkmums #hkhomelearning #hkmama

PURPLE // Water play is one of Mr 1.5’s absolute favourite activities. He’s happy to splash around in a plain basin of water - but to keep it exciting we like to change up the equipment, add different toys/colours/foam/taste-safe things from the kitchen - anything that provides another sensory element. This is the first time I heard him say “purple” spontaneously! #hkmama #hkhomelearning #flisat

COLLAGE & SYMMETRY // Miss 4.5 is currently doing a unit of enquiry at school on art. To tie in with this, we got out some of the pretty wrapping paper we had saved from Christmas to do a collage. Credit for this idea must go to my paternal grandmother (Miss 4.5’s great grandmother) who used to be a primary school art teacher. She often speaks fondly of her teaching days. I make a conscious effort to apply her wisdom in my own teaching and parenting. #hkmama #hkhomelearning #hkmums

RASPBERRY APPLE BAKE // Mr 1.5 has always been wary of slimy and squishy textures, but he is more adventurous when it comes to cooking. Baking is great for sensory stimulation, and more recently it has been an opportunity to practise his new vocabulary. He can say “apple”, “egg” and “spoon” now. #hkmama #hkmums #hkhomelearning

LETTER RECOGNITION // Mr Almost 2 (1 year 10 months) started showing an interest in letters this week! We have so far introduced two GPCs: o and t. Here he is doing a matching activity. The first GPCs that are usually taught in Phase 2 are s a t p, but we are diverging from the usual order to accommodate the speech sounds he is so far able to produce. He has been keen to point out these letters when he sees them in books. #hongkongphonics #hkmama #hongkonghomelearning

LETTER FORMATION // Today Miss 4.5 sorted out a set of magnetic lowercase letters according to whether they are tall, small or long. This was a good warmup for some handwriting practice. She can remember which category each of the letters belong to, but actually writing them is more of a challenge.

DOES IT FIT? // Mr 1.5 was experimenting to see if his busses and cars would fit under the Magnatile arch. A good opportunity to practise early mathematical language like “too big” and “too small”. The green minibus fits! #hkmama #hkhomelearning #hkmums

NOTE RECOGNITION // Miss 4.5 did this card sorting activity in her music practice session @happiano.hk . It takes a lot of repetition to build the necessary three-way connection between i)the note name ii) the note on the stave and iii) the note on the instrument. The connection needs to be instantaneous in order to sight-read music effectively. This exercise is one way to add more sensory interest to the activity and hopefully make it more engaging.

FINGERPAINTING // Mr 1.5yo always runs away from paint-related activities at school, but somehow he is fine with paint at home! These sauce squeezers we got at @tokyuhandsinc_official made the activity all the more enjoyable.

COLOURS AND SHAPES // Today Mr 1.5 practised matching colours using shapes from his @fisherprice shape sorter toy and his @elc_uk beakers. He is able to say some of the names of the colours with varying degrees of accuracy!

NUMBER BONDS // Miss 4.5 practised her number bonds to 10 with our “fishing 10” card game. She wanted to play over and over! Our @elctoys number cards were great for this game but normal playing cards work too.

PAT A CAKE // Miss 4.5 practised writing capital letters in her @kineticsand cakes. In our household we start with lower case letters and letter sounds only to avoid confusion. We only introduce capital letters and letter names when the child has mastered lower case and letter sounds. Miss 4.5 is starting to use capital letters correctly in her writing.

VACUUMING // Today Miss 4.5 used her @dyson vacuum cleaner to practise character recognition. It’s quite a challenge keeping up with her school syllabus!

NOTES // It is so important to ensure that children are really reading the music and not relying on memory or numbered fingering to play. This was an activity to help Miss 4 make the three-way connection between notation on the stave, note name and position on the keyboard.
